The department of the Cantal is located in the south east of the Auvergne region. Its name comes from the mountains which spread through the region - the Monts du Cantal. The capital of the Cantal department is Aurillac. Cantal has borders with Puy-de-Dome to the north, Haute-Loire (east), Lozère, Aveyron and Lot to the south and Corrèze in the Limousin in the west.
